The Project

The WCI is a new 345 kilovolt transmission project that will stretch approximately 180 miles between the Laramie River Station substation located near Wheatland, Wyoming and Pawnee substation located near Brush, Colorado. The project will provide 850 MW of firm transmission service across the TOT3 constraint located at the Wyoming-Colorado border.

FAQS

Why is WCI needed?
The Wyoming Colorado Intertie is needed to increase capacity on the electric transmission system and increase grid reliability. The existing transmission system is near its limit with little room for additional generation resources. The WCI will enable Wyoming’s low cost renewable energy resources to reach load centers in Colorado and potentially beyond.

What is the in-service date?

The WCI is being developed such that its in-service date is properly timed with the market need for the project. The need is highly dependent on regional growth and can not be predicted with certainty. However, given today’s outlook the project sponsors are proceeding with a planned 2014 or 2015 in-service date.

What is the route for the project?
The WCI sponsors have identified multiple potential routes for the project, but have not yet selected a final route. The final route will be selected by considering and balancing the following criteria:
• Meeting the needs of WCI customers
• Minimizing public concerns
• Considering public input
• Minimizing environmental impacts
• Minimizing costs

How can WCI capacity be purchased?
Parties interested in acquiring capacity on the WCI should register in the “Available Capacity” section to obtain a login for more information.

How can I be involved?
The WCI sponsors encourages all interested citizens and stakeholders to participate and share their views on the projects. We have established several ways for you to get involved and will listen to your comments and feedback.

In person – Open House meetings will be held in communities along the potential routes. During these open houses we will collect written and verbal comments that will be used to help plan the project. The Open House meetings will be advertised locally and a schedule of all meetings will be posted on our web site.
